Disaster Research Programme, JNU launched a live video conference on 7th January, 2016 at 7:00 pm connected through the use ICT tool video conferencing administrators and JNU DRP core research members and a large number of academicians.

It enabled an interactive discussion on disaster research in our country amongst the important stakeholders and brought into focus the importance of communication technology in disaster management.It is a historic moment as for the first timean academic institute was connected to District Disaster Management Authority. The video conference is the first step towards the launch of other webinar programmes in JNU.

Disaster Research is an area where ICT has a large impact, from preparedness through early warning, data collection and collation to geo referenced maps for easy and timely retrieval and their usage.ICT can also enable online surveillance and monitoring of disaster mitigation programmes. The resource mapping done using GIS tools can be a ready referral for implementing authorities. GIS maps which can ensure quick identification of affected area and also show location of nearest hospital, fire station, emergency shelter, easiest and safest exit route, availability of equipment, etc. ICT can enable a disaster management plan to be a live document which can be accessed by a District Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Disaster Management Professional or even a Volunteer. ICT enables effective communication between task forces at village level. This conference also highlighted the importance of time management and bypassing traffic during peak hours. The discussion included the college clusters being created of four colleges LSR, Gargi, Miranda and Kamla Nehru to do neighbourhood mapping and understand the capacity level of the community in case of disasters. The conference laid down a future map of how video conference can be used to connect more departments together and more districts at the same time.The discussion then pointed to the need of having secured network connections. Also, shared simulation models of technology and Mock Drills were discussed. The discussion also brought out the need of having community based measures and quick dissemination and coordination of information with the stakeholders.
